The four convicts in the Delhi gang-rape case will be hanged at 5.30 am on March 20, a Delhi court ordered on Thursday. This is the fourth death warrant to be issued by the court in the case.
President Ram Nath Kovind rejected the mercy petition of Pawan Gupta; with this, all the four convicts have exhausted all the legal options available to them.
A 23-year-old physiotherapy intern known as ‘Nirbhaya’ was gang-raped and assaulted in a moving bus in South Delhi on December 16 in 2012. She succumbed to injuries on December 29 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore where she was taken for better medical treatment.
Six including the four convicts and a juvenile were named as accused. Ram Singh, the sixth accused allegedly committed suicide in Tihar jail days after the trial began in the case. The juvenile was released in 2015 after spending three years in a correctional home.
The case which shook the conscience of the nation was tried in a fast-track court. After the trial proceedings, the case again hogged the limelight after Nirbhaya’s family and social activists accused the convicts of using legal provisions merely to delay their hanging. But the courts maintained they cannot afford to adversely discriminate any convict, including death row convict, in pursuit of his or her legal remedies, by turning Nelson’s eye towards them.
“We are hopeful that the convicts will be hanged this month and justice will be finally delivered to us after a long wait,” he further said.
