FALLEN LEAVES CONTRIBUTE FOR PAPER – UKRANIAN STUDENT’S SCIENCE PROJECT HUGE SUCCESS

by Smitha S

Normally paper is made using trees and other sources which provide cellulose fibres. In the case of trees every part of a tree is used in the production. But cellulose fibres can be extracted from a variety of sources too and converted to pulp. Trees are usually churned out  by gigantic machines to extract their pulps. Though paper has been made from a wide variety of materials such as cotton, wheat straw, sugar cane waste, flax, bamboo, wood, linen rags and hemp ,these days only recycled paper products and woods are used ona large scale. Approximately 1 billion trees worth of paper are thrown away every year in the U.S.

A high school student living in rural Ukraine named Vlentyn Frechka has discovered in his science project where fallen leaves from trees and plants can be made into paper. The 19 yr old is heading an initiative called  “Re-Leaf Paper” ,which produces paper bags and packaging from fibre extracted from the “dead leaves”.this project aims to reduce the environmental impact of paper production.

“The idea is very simple. Things which are believed to be waste can be reused or recycled. Leaves Are waste that need to be removed from parks because they emit a lot of carbon as they rot,” Frechka told. “It is an opportunity for a customer to use environmental-friendly packaging”, he added.
