Cristian Mallocci, an Italian farmer stood “awestruck” when he saw his dog Spelacchia give birth to a green-furred puppy along with seven other normal furred ones. The mother dog was a mixed breed though but all the puppies were all the same coilured as the mum except the special one who was green. The little one was immediately named “Pistachio”.
Mallocci runs a farm on the Meditteranean Island of Sardinia with his brother- in-law. This was indeed a shocking and first time experience for him as it’s a phenomenon that happens only rarely. It is believed that this happens when pale coloured puppies have contact with green pigment called “Biliverdin ” in their mother’s womb. This same pigment is the one that we see sometimes in bruises we get.
This peculiar colour of Pistachio is not going to last forever though. It was bright green fur on the day it was born and had already faded after each passing day. Pistachio’s brothers and sisters were given away to new homes and Mallocci decided to keep Pistachio in his farm and train him to look after the sheep with his mother Spelacchia.
As green colour already idolises as something related to positivity, fertility, luck etc Mallocci likes to believe during the tough times of this current pandemic, Pistachio has come to him bringing him some hope and he feels this might put a smile on people’s faces.
