WHO to find out more about the origin of Coronavirus in Wuhan

by Smitha S

The WHO has said that a team of 10 international scientists will be traveling to the Chinese city of Wuhan to investigate the origins of covid-19. The WHO has been arranging for access to them for several months now although China has not said NO to an independent investigation.

The virus is thought to have come from a market in the city where animals are sold. But the actual source searches had led to tensions in many countries notable in the US. Trump’s presidency had even accused China of trying to cover up the source of the virus. But the step now being taken by the WHO is not to put any blame on the country but rather to prevent future outbreaks. The WHO officials have confirmed that the aim of the mission is not about finding a guilty country but about trying to understand what happened and see if based on those data they can reduce the risk in the future. For that, they need to find out whether the virus actually originated in Wuhan. The mission is expected to last four to five weeks.

When the pandemic broke out it was traced back to a so-called “wet market” in Wuhan, Hubei province. Some experts believe that it might have just got amplified there rather than originating. Research suggests that coronavirus is capable of infecting humans through bats which might have been there for decades undetected. In 2019 December, a Chinese doctor at Wuhan Central Hospital, Dr. Li Wenliang tried to warn fellow medics about a possible outbreak of a new contagious disease, but the police had warned him not to make false comments and stop spreading rumors. But unfortunately, Dr. Li died in February 2020 after contracting the virus himself while treating patients with the pandemic condition.

Allegations and suspicions came out saying that the virus might have leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan. Recent reports in Chinese media however suggested that covid-19 could have started outside China. The analysts however say that the reports spreading about them are all without any base and the campaign reflects anxiety within the leadership in Beijing about the damage to the country’s international reputation. However, this trip will particularly concentrate on the main areas like whether the virus originated from bats? Was there an “intermediate host” linking bats to humans? and were Wuhan wet markets at the main point of the initial outbreak?
